The Valdemino Caves
The Valdemino Caves of Borgio Verezzi were discovered only in 1933.
By following the path of a stream, three young boys from the village entered the first “chamber” of a new cave; here, with the smoke from a candle they wrote the date and their names: Lillo, Tito and Valentino.
No one noticed this extraordinary discovery until 1951, when Giovanni Dentella, head of a team of speleologists, started to sistematically explore the cave, thus discovering some more kilometres of galleries and chambers. The same Dentella – hit by the beauty of this underground world – planned and realised the tourist route that was opened in 1970.
Here we can find a rich variety of concretions: thin and almost transparent “pipes”, draperies thin as sheets, big columns that seem to hold the vault, and singular stalactites that challenge the law of gravity by developing in every direction.
And everywhere there are colours! White, yellow, red, in lots of different shades. They are due to the presence of several minerals and render the Caves of Borgio Verezzi the most colourful tourist caves in Italy.
Also extremely important are the fossil fragments found in different parts of the cave. Dating back to 500.000 and 750.000 years ago, they include fossils of extinct varieties of animals that are used to live in warm and cold climates: rhinos, elephants, tigres, crocodiles, macaques, turtles, and bears, mammooths, deer, rock goats and horses respectively. This variety testifies to the succession of ice and non-ice ages characterising the last two millions of ages of our planet’s life.
